Jazz Society

Washington Jazz Society nurturing local musical talent

 

The WSJ is a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 with the mission of educating the public about jazz music through concerts featuring national and local musicians. Washington Jazz Society also works to educate people about the historical development and significance of jazz music with a special emphasis on young musicians and young audiences and is the recipient of this month’s Driven By Hope Award, sponsored by Washington Auto Mall.

WCGSA-making

Driven By Hope: WCGSA making splash in community

 

The organization started in the youth community in 2005 and incorporated in 2012 to expand programming for all ages and to the entire community. Their effort and important work are the reason WCGSA Inc. is the June recipient of the Driven By Hope Award, sponsored by Washington Auto Mall.

Jameson’s Army: Helping families touched by congenital heart defects

 

Danielle describes sitting in the hospital cafeteria on that Thanksgiving Day watching families of patients not able to enjoy a holiday meal at home. “I was just like this isn’t right, this is Thanksgiving,” she remembers. “Life doesn’t stop when your kid is in the hospital, so my husband and I came up with the idea to do Thanksgiving here.”

Impacted Inc.: Sharing knowledge about concussions with others

 

Patrick’s journey inspired Pattiann and her husband, Tom, to form Impacted Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization aimed at spreading awareness and support for families impacted by head injuries. “We are driven to help so that no parent or child needs to experience the difficulties of concussions alone,” says Pattiann. “Our journey was extremely long and painful, and we had little to no guidance. We hope to be beacons of light for others to follow.”

She says she’s living proof of the healing power of horses. “Bobo was a really big part of the process,” she says. “They can do wonders, and they can do a lot for you. They’re such a good companion animal, make you feel safe and don’t judge you. All they want is your love and attention.”
